The Federation started as an informal working group of representatives from various alumni associations of Hong Kong schools in March 1996. During these gatherings, all the representatives felt the need for an association consisting of, and serving solely, former Hong Kong students residing in Southern California.
During 1996, a “morning tea” event with Mrs. Anson Chan, Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, was hosted in June. A “moon-viewing” Mid-Autumn Festival dinner with Mr. Donald Tsang, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, was organized in September. We also had our first annual Christmas Charity Ball in December. The Federation was officially incorporated the following year in 1997.
To coordinate the efforts among its members to promote cultural, educational, and social activities of common interest and to establish a network for communication and cooperation. It also renders administrative support to alumni associations of individual Hong Kong schools and assists in hosting their events and activities.
The Federation typically organizes several social events during the year, including a Chinese New Year dinner, summer picnic, speaker event/interest class, Mid Autumn Festival party and Christmas Gala. In conjunction with the Scholarship Foundation, it awards scholarships to needy students from Hong Kong and California to attend universities in the US.
The Board of Directors consists of prominent members of the community from different fields of expertise. All directors serve on a voluntary basis and meet once a month to plan and discuss matters pertaining to the organization. The Federation is grateful for the service of over 100 past directors who have helped to attain the success of the organization. These members continue to support and provide valuable advice.
